Below are are many of the front pages that helped to shape the lives of Parkersburg residents. The pages range from the second edition of The Parkersburg Sentinel in 1875 through the very first edition of The Parkersburg News and Sentinel formed when The Parkersburg News and The Parkersburg Sentinel merged printing on Aug. 25, 2009. “Iraqi Forces Occupy Kuwait, Set up Own Government”
“Iraq Warned About POWs”
“146th Med Had Front Row Seat”
When Iraq invaded Kuwait after weeks of
threats to do so, the United
States went into action, warning Iraq’s President Saddam Hussein if
Americans in Kuwait were harmed, the president would take action.
Iraq’s assets were frozen and President Bush condemned Iraq’s aggression against its neighbor. The Persian Gulf War lasted for a year when a cease fire was declared by the President.

Trade Center bombing
"Trade Center Blast Kills Seven"
A gaint blast rocked New York's World Trade Center, killing seven. Years later both buildings would be brought down when terrorist flew jets into the towers.

Terrorist attacks
“Second Pearl Harbor - Horror Escalates as Towers Collapse”
The nation was horrified as they watched two hijacked planes filled
with people crash into the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers. The
horror continued when another plane crashed into the Pentagon and one was
found crashed in Pennslyvania after the passengers rebelled against
the terrorists controlling it. A local family was hard hit by the
tragedy when their daughter, Mary Lou Hague who worked at the World Trade Center, became one of the victims.

Shuttle
"Shuttle Disaster, Space shuttle Columbia disintegrates over Texas"
The entire crew was lost as the shuttle tore apart as it prepared to land. It was later determined that a piece of foam hit the wing as the spacecraft blasted into space at the start of the flight.

the war may have ended, the U.S. kept peacekeeping forces in the country while it rebuilt.

Jessica Lynch
“Lynch Rescued”
Wirt County native Jessica Lynch made headlines when she was taken as a prisoner of war during the Iraq War when her troop was ambushed. The
local community held a vigil for her and when she was rescued by
special ops forces, rejoiced along with her family.

Election Night 2008 took a historic turn when Barack Obama beat John McCain, becoming the first black president-elect. Millions tuned in on television to watch the events of Inauguration Day, as a crowd of thousands gathered at the National Mall to watch in person. Even as Obama’s Inauguration Day took place, the day took a turn when Sen. Edward Kennedy and Sen. Robert Byrd were both rushed to the hospital.
